OPEN ROAD SUMMER | BOOK REVIEW

Synopsis: After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of breakup ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

Open Road Summer was a very good read. It was not my favorite book in the whole entire world, but it was still good. I think the plot was thought out, the characters had depth, and the love story was there. I wasn't a big fan of the writing style, I felt like every chapter ended the same way, by Reagan explaining some inner feeling. While I like the theme of that, it doesn't make you want to continue the book, where some chapters should have cliffhangers so you won't want to stop. I think the book is pretty forgettable, but otherwise a good read to pass the time.

Some points I liked were that the main character was actually the best friend of a celebrity, instead of being the celebrity herself, which of course makes the story more relatable. It is still a far-fetched idea and I felt that there were some holes here and there, but a good take on the whole celebrity lifestyle. It was hard not to compare the book to The Wrong Side of Right because both had to deal with the spotlight, and I just read TWSOR, but it did hold its own.

I think another thing that disappointed me was the love story between Matt and Reagan. I felt there wasn't enough drama or lead up to the relationship and it was kind of just them thrown together and then they end up together. I also thought that the ending "climax" if you will, was a little short and did not have a very good build up to the resolve. I did like the best friend dynamic between Dee and Reagan, but I also felt emotion or something lacking. I think this book just was missing something.

Overall I would rate this book probably a 7/10. Not a must read this instant, but if you did come across it, I say go for it! I like a little bit of tug and pull in my love stories, but if you like when a couple gets together pretty quickly then this is the romance for you!

Until next time,

Britt
